Which Focus you have

Mk2 (2004–2011) — including the ST. Corrosion is the usual complication at this age rather than identification.
Mk3 (2011–2018) — the volume generation, and heavily used as a fleet and lease car.
Mk4 (2018–2025) — later pattern range, including the ST and Active.

Fleet history is the complication

The Focus went out in vast numbers on company and lease fleets, which means a national tyre contract, a different fitter every time, and no paperwork following the key. By the time it reaches a private owner the plastic case is usually long gone and nobody can say what pattern is on the car.

The related risk is torque. Fleet tyre work is done fast, with air guns, and locking nuts are supposed to be hand-torqued. A nut done up to 200Nm will defeat a key rated for a correct 120Nm. If your Focus has fleet history, use a proper breaker bar rather than leaning on a short wrench, and don't let anyone put an impact gun on it again.

The number isn't on your V5

Ford uses a numbered range of locking patterns, and the number isn't recorded against your registration. Two Focuses built the same week can carry different ones, and wheels get swapped over a fifteen-year life. That's why we work from the photograph rather than the reg.

Where the key usually is

Boot, under the floor, in the foam tool tray beside the jack. Estates have underfloor storage worth checking. On the Mk3 it's frequently in the glovebox. And on any ex-fleet car, ring the tyre place first — that's the single most likely place it ended up.
