Which Kuga you have

  • Mk1 (2008–2012) — the original, sold in smaller numbers than what followed.
  • Mk2 (2012–2019) — including the 2016 facelift. Titanium and ST-Line trims on 18" and 19" alloys.
  • Mk3 (2019 on) — current, including the plug-in hybrid, which is a very common company car.

The company car years

A large share of Kugas — especially Mk3 PHEVs — went out on business leases, and a lease car goes wherever the fleet contract sends it for tyres. Two consequences. The key gets handed back into a tool tray rather than the glovebox, so a lot of used Kugas simply never had one. And the nuts get run on with an impact gun instead of being torqued to Ford's 110 Nm, so they're tighter than they should be.

Tight nuts are where the wrong key does damage. It seats, it feels like it's biting, and then it rounds under load.

Ford numbers aren't on your V5C

Ford uses a numbered range of locking patterns rather than one key per model, and the number isn't recorded against your registration. There's no lookup that will get you there — not at a dealer, not from the DVLA. If the original code card is gone, the pattern on the nut is the only record, which is exactly what a photograph captures.
