Which Polo you have

Polo Mk4 (2002–2009) — the round-headlight and later facelift cars. Expect weathered bolt heads.
Polo Mk5 (2009–2017) — including the 6C facelift. Very common, huge numbers on UK roads.
Polo Mk6 (2017 on) — bigger car on the MQB platform, current pattern range.

Like the Golf, the Polo uses locking wheel bolts rather than nuts — the bolt goes through the wheel into the hub, and there's usually a plastic cap over the head.

Cheap car, expensive mistake

The Polo is a second car and a first car, so it changes hands often and the original key is rarely still with it. It's also the sort of car where people are reluctant to spend money, and that's exactly where guessing goes wrong.

A near-miss key on a VW bolt doesn't fail obviously. It goes in, it feels tight, and it strips the spline out of the bolt head under load. At that point the cheap fix is gone: you're paying a garage £40–£60 to remove one bolt, or £55–£85 for all four, plus a replacement bolt set. Identifying it properly first costs nothing.

Getting a photo we can read

Pull the plastic cap off first — the puller clip lives in the boot toolkit, and if it's missing, long-nose pliers with cloth over the jaws will do it carefully. Then wipe the recess out. Road grit sitting in the spline is the single most common reason we have to ask for a second photo.
