Which A3 you have

A3 8P (2003–2012) — three-door, Sportback and the cabriolet. Includes the S3 8P.
A3 8V (2012–2020) — saloon arrived with this one. The generation we're asked about most.
A3 8Y (2020 on) — current, and the current pattern range with it.

All of them use locking wheel bolts, not nuts, with a plastic cap over the head.

Aftermarket wheels are the complication

More than most cars on this site, A3s get wheels swapped. RS-style replicas, wheels off a Golf R, a set carried over from a previous car — and when the wheels change, the bolts usually change with them, because the seat profile has to match the new wheel. So the pattern on your car may have nothing to do with what Audi fitted at the factory.

That's not a problem for us — we work from the photograph, not from a factory chart. But it's the reason a lookup table based on your registration will lead you wrong on this car specifically.

The A3 sits on the same platform as the Golf, Leon and Octavia, and draws from the same overlapping range of locking bolt patterns. Several numbers in that range differ only in spline depth and look identical at a glance. A key that's one step out will seat, feel like it's gripping, then round the bolt head under load.
