Which C-Class you have

W203 (2000–2007) — saloon, estate and the Sport Coupe. Corrosion in the bolt recess is the usual obstacle at this age.
W204 (2007–2014) — sold in enormous numbers. The generation we get asked about most.
W205 (2014–2021) — including the C43 and C63. Usually on 18" or 19" wheels.
W206 (2021 on) — current range.

Mercedes uses locking wheel bolts, not nuts — the bolt passes through the wheel into the hub, and on most trims there's a plastic cap over the head.

The number is not on your V5C

This is the thing people find hardest to believe. Mercedes doesn't record the locking bolt pattern against your registration, and a main dealer generally can't look it up from the VIN either. If you don't have the original code card — a small card, sometimes in the wallet with the service book — there is no paperwork route to the answer.

The pattern itself is the record. That's why a photograph works and a registration lookup doesn't.

Mercedes numbers run in close sequences

The Mercedes range uses tight numbered sequences where neighbouring codes differ by a fraction of a millimetre in the spline. On a W204 in particular, several numbers are visually near-identical. A key one step out will go in, feel like it's biting, and round the bolt head as soon as you put your weight on the bar.

At that point you're looking at £40–£60 at a garage to get one bolt off, and around £40 a wheel again as a failed-attempt surcharge if it's already chewed.
