Which A-Class you have

W169 (2004–2012) — the tall, boxy one. Very different car to what came after.
W176 (2012–2018) — the hatchback that changed the model's fortunes. AMG Line trims came on larger alloys as standard.
W177 (2018 on) — current. Shares its locking range with the CLA, GLA and B-Class of the same period.

Like the rest of the range, the A-Class uses locking wheel bolts rather than nuts.

Why we see so many of these

The A-Class is the entry point into the brand, and a large share of them were PCP deals returned after three or four years. A returned PCP car goes through a preparation centre and then to a used lot, and the little bolt key is one of the first things to go missing in that chain — not lost by anyone in particular, just never passed along.

If you bought yours used, don't assume it's somewhere in the car. Check the boot toolkit well once and then photograph the bolt.

AMG Line wheels change the answer

Trim matters on this car more than most. AMG Line and A35/A45 wheels use different bolt seat profiles to the standard alloys, so two W176s of the same year can carry different locking patterns. That's why we ask for the trim as well as the year — it narrows the range before we even look closely at the photo.

Identification is free. The Mercedes matching service comes with free UK delivery. Removal at a garage runs £40–£60 for one wheel and £55–£85 for all four, and leaves you needing a new bolt set on top.
