Which A4 you have

  • A4 B7 (2004–2008) — saloon, Avant and cabriolet. Old enough that corrosion in the bolt recess is common.
  • A4 B8 (2008–2015) — including the Allroad and the S4. Sold in very large numbers as a company car.
  • A4 B9 (2015 on) — current-generation pattern range.

All use locking wheel bolts rather than nuts, with a plastic cap over the head.

The company car history

A huge proportion of A4s spent their first three years on a lease fleet. That matters here for the same reason it matters on a 5 Series: fleet cars go to whichever tyre bay is cheapest and nearest, the bolts get run on with an impact gun rather than torqued to Audi's 120 Nm, and the little key gets handed back into a tool tray rather than the glovebox.

So on a used A4 the key is often not missing because someone lost it — it was never in the car when you bought it. And the bolts are frequently much tighter than they should be, which is exactly the condition in which a not-quite-right key strips instead of turning.

Bigger wheels, more contact with tyre bays

B8 and B9 A4s on 18" and 19" wheels run low-profile tyres that kerb easily and wear fast. More tyre changes means more chances for the key to go missing, and more impact-gun cycles on the same four bolts. If yours is on 19s, assume the bolts are tight.

How the matching works

  1. Photograph the locking bolt — cap off, recess wiped clean, straight on, daylight, no flash.
  2. Send it with your generation and year. We confirm the exact key before you pay.
  3. Free UK delivery, Royal Mail Tracked 24, out within one working day.

Cost

Identification is free. Use the Audi matching service, or the combined VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda service. Free UK delivery either way. A garage will charge £40–£60 to remove a single locking bolt, and around £40 a wheel again if someone has already rounded it.
