Which Mini you have

R50 / R52 / R53 (2001–2006) — the first BMW-era Mini, including the supercharged Cooper S.
R56 and family (2006–2013) — hatch, Clubman, Convertible, Coupe and Roadster.
F55 / F56 (2014 on) — three-door, five-door and Convertible.
Countryman (R60, F60) — bigger wheels again, and a different part of the range.

Mini uses locking wheel bolts, not nuts — the bolt passes through the wheel into the hub.

Mini runs on BMW patterns

Mini has been BMW-owned since 2001 and draws from the same locking bolt range. That matters for two reasons. It means the number of possible patterns is large — there are hundreds across the BMW range, and two cars built the same week can carry different ones. And it means BMW's design change around 2012 applies here too: older cars use a spline or RIBE pattern, newer ones a keyed bolt head with a free-spinning collar around it.

If your bolt head has a loose outer ring that spins freely when you touch it, that's the later design and it's working as intended. It's there to stop a socket gripping the outside.

Wheels get changed on these

Minis are personalised more than almost anything else on the road, and a set of aftermarket or later-model wheels brings its own bolts with it. So a chart that says "2009 Cooper S uses key X" may be describing a car that no longer exists in your driveway. The photograph is the only reliable answer.

Our keys are cut from hardened steel to the original pattern, not soft cast copies — how our keys are made. That matters more on a Mini than most, because the bolts are often very tight and a soft copy will deform before the bolt moves.
