Which X5 you have

E53 (1999–2006) — the original. Spline or RIBE pattern, and usually well weathered by now.
E70 (2006–2013) — the big UK seller of the range.
F15 (2013–2018) — spans BMW's design change, so either pattern type turns up here.
G05 (2018 on) — current, on the later keyed-head design.

Like the rest of the BMW range, the X5 uses locking wheel bolts rather than nuts.

Big wheels, tight bolts

X5s run 19", 20" and 21" wheels carrying a two-and-a-half tonne car, and the bolts are torqued accordingly — BMW specifies 140 Nm on most of the range, and tyre bays routinely exceed that with an impact gun. This is the car where a soft, cast copy key genuinely fails: the key deforms before the bolt moves, and now you have a rounded bolt head and a useless key.

BMW changed the design around 2012

Older BMWs use a spline or RIBE pattern cut into the bolt head. From roughly 2012 the design changed to a keyed head with a free-spinning outer collar, specifically to stop a removal socket gripping the outside. There are hundreds of individual patterns across both types, and two cars built the same week can carry different ones.

If the outer ring on your bolt spins freely when you touch it, that's the later design and nothing is broken. Photograph the inner head.

Identification is free. The BMW matching service comes with free UK delivery, or buy your code directly. Removal on a 21" wheel is at the top of the £40–£60 range, and there's an alloy refurbishment bill behind it if the socket slips.
