Locking Wheel Nut Key Rounded, Stripped or Snapped: What's Gone Wrong
You've got the key, you've put it on, and it isn't working. Before you buy anything, it's worth working out which part has failed, because the fix is completely different depending on the answer.
Symptom: the key spins freely in the nut
The key drops in, you turn it, and it rotates with no resistance at all.
This is almost always the nut, not the key. Many locking wheel nuts are built in two parts — a hardened inner body that does the actual clamping, and an outer sleeve that carries the pattern. The sleeve is meant to be free-spinning by design on some brands, as an anti-theft measure, but on others corrosion breaks the bond between the two and the sleeve starts turning independently.
A new key will not fix this. The key is gripping something that is no longer connected to the thread. This is a removal job.
Symptom: the key slips or jumps out under load
It engages, you lean on the bar, and it climbs out of the nut with a bang.
Usually one of three things:
- It's the wrong key. Close patterns exist within the same manufacturer's range, and a nearly-right key will seat but not grip. This is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix.
- The key's splines are worn. These keys are often softer than the nut. After a few hundred torque cycles at a tyre place the edges round off. Look at the end of the key: if the corners of the splines look polished and rounded rather than sharp, that's your answer.
- The nut is over-torqued. Air guns do this constantly. Tyre fitters are supposed to hand-torque locking nuts and frequently don't. A nut done up to 200Nm will defeat a key that would handle a correct 120Nm.
For the first two, a fresh correct key solves it. For the third, a fresh key plus a decent breaker bar and a bit of penetrating fluid usually will.
Symptom: the key has snapped off in the nut
Stop. Don't try to drill it or hammer it.
A snapped key jammed in the nut face is a specialist removal job, and it's one where enthusiastic DIY genuinely does turn a £60 problem into a £300 one, because the wheel is right there and the tools involved are unforgiving. Get a mobile locking wheel nut removal specialist out.
Symptom: the pattern on the nut is chewed
If someone has already had a go with a universal removal socket, or forced the wrong key, the splines on the nut may be rounded past the point where anything will grip them cleanly.
Look at the nut face and compare it to the other four bolts on the wheel. Crisp, defined edges mean a correct key will still work. Smeared, shiny, indistinct edges mean it won't.

How to tell the key from the nut in thirty seconds
Put the key on a different wheel. All four locking nuts on a car are the same pattern, so if the key works on one wheel and not another, the problem is that specific nut. If it fails on all four, the problem is the key — either wrong or worn.
It's the simplest diagnostic there is and it costs nothing.
Getting a replacement key
If you've concluded the key is the problem, the number stamped on the old key is the fastest route — wipe it clean and look for two to four digits on the collar or the flat end.
